Leica Geosystems Visits the Londonderry School

During the National Surveyor's Week, Steve Long, Professional Surveyor, visited with

Londonderrry School 5th - 8th grade students and assisted with the collection of data for a Geographic Information System (GIS) of the School Property. Steve Long helped the students learn how to use Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Steve set up a GPS Base Station  in the School parking lot.

To the left is a view of the GPS data Collected by the Londonderry students.

The GPS data was loaded into ArcView 3.2 GIS Software.

A DOQQ of the school grounds was used as a base map. The aerial photograph of our school is a free registered image that was downloaded from the PASDA site

http://www.pasda.psu.edu

PASDA is the Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access, a clearinghouse for GIS and Spatial data available to Pennsylvania Residence.

The Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrant (DOQQ) is only one example of the many types of GIS data available at the PASDA site.

The DOQQ is projected in UTM Zone 18, so the GPS data was projected to the base map so that it would over lay the photo in the ArcView 3.2 GIS Software from ESRI.
