Urban Archaeology: Was this place a dump?

By Michael Hester, The Londonderry School, Harrisburg, PA, Grade 7

"I have always enjoyed playing in the dirt , especially digging holes. During the summer, I would walk down to the creek to look for minnows, salamanders and other living things to fill in those holes. Sort of like making a man made pond. It was during this time, I would see chips of broken glass, nails, and bottles just barely beneath the earth’s surface located along the side of the hill. I investigated  by digging holes and unearthed some interesting objects. I begun thinking that this place may have been a dump or residential  trash site. I this experiment, I will try to show evidence of a buried dump site. Three holes were excavated 10 feet apart from each other. The contents were  catalogued. Also, a  questionnaire was used for members of the neighborhood. This experiments found evidence of  a dump and homesteads on the site. And more importantly, my interviews with the people who have lived in that area for more than 50 year produced additional evidence to prove the hypothesis that the site was a dump at one time."

State Archaeologist from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's Commonwealth Archaeology Program visited Michael's site to inspect the artifacts taken from the dig.
